Abdul Sattar Jawad was born in Baghdad, Iraq in 1939, and has painted and drawn as a past time since childhood. After completing a Bachelor of Commerce and beginning his professional career he also began to exhibit his art work in the early 1960's. He has a high diploma in painting and drawing, and membership of the Iraqi Society of Fine Arts, and the Iraqi Artists Union.
After participating in many group exhibitions in the 1960's and 1970's he made the decision to stop exhibiting, as he was uncomfortable about his work being used for political propaganda purpose. From that time on he only painted for friends and family, and private commissions.
In 1998 following his retirement he and his wife made the decision to emigrate to New Zealand to join their son and daughter, who both lived here. Since that time he has participated in many group exhibitions and competitions, received an Waitakere Central Community Arts Council merit prize in 2000; a first prize in the painting section at the 2003 Easter Show; and "the best of the west" award at the Titirangi Painters 2005 exhibition. He is an active member of the Waitakere Central Community Arts Council.
Abdul has a strong interest in reflecting the true nature of the landscape and has developed a process of painting whereby he will visit a location, photograph a scene and prepare the initial painting in his studio, before returning to the site to complete the work in situ. This way he ensures that he has accurately captured the light and feeling of the scene. He regularly exhibits locally and his works can be found at the West Marina cafe in West Harbour.
